Graduation

We learned we have a choice.

Eighty-three men in white, each called by name, walked down the center aisle to the sound of Pomp and Circumstance in the Dolph Briscoe Unit in Dilley, Texas on Saturday, September 24, 2022 as they received Certificates for completing The Men’s Workshop course.

They were cheered and clapped for. Some of the men in white tossed wash clothes (it’s hot in the prison gym) high in the air as they celebrated.

A band made up of three former men in white and two fabulous female singers played before and after the graduation. A banquet provided by Cappy Lawton (actually it was a feast) feed everyone there, including guards and personnel.

The Master of Ceremonies was Enoch, ably assisted by his wife, Kenae. The Warden spoke, the Chaplain spoke and three men in white who took the course spoke. The common message from all three was “We learned we have a choice.”

From my vantage point, I could see the men in white. Their eyes were riveted on the three speakers when they spoke.

Enoch called me forward to recognize me. He said he had prayed that God would send him someone to help with his ministry. “And God sent me an old white man.”

A glorious day. I wish you could have been there.
